How is Share of Voice measured?
Share of Voice is measured as the proportion of collected answers in which your brand appears, across the prompts you track and the engines your plan covers. It is one overall figure per prompt set, computed only from runs that resolved cleanly. Runs that failed are excluded rather than counted as absence.
The denominator is the set of answers we actually collected, not the set we intended to collect. That is a deliberate choice: including failed runs would let an outage look like a decline.
It is a proportion, so it moves when a competitor gains as well as when you lose. Reading it alongside your own appearance count is what separates "we slipped" from "the category got busier".
It is also a sample. Engine answers vary between runs on identical inputs, so a single figure is directional and a trend over several runs is the thing to act on.
