What is Share of Voice (Search)?

By SearchChamp teamUpdated

Share of voice (SOV) in search measures your brand’s percentage of total visibility within a defined competitive set across a fixed keyword set. Calculated as (your impressions or rankings) / (total impressions or rankings of all tracked competitors) × 100. Modern SOV tracking includes both organic SERP visibility AND AI search citation rate. Useful for board reporting, competitive positioning, and proving SEO ROI to non-technical stakeholders.

Share of Voice (Search) in context

Share of voice as a marketing concept dates back to traditional advertising — the percentage of total ad spend or media presence within a category. The search-specific version became popular through SEMrush’s “Visibility Score” and Ahrefs’ “Share of Voice” report. In 2024-2026, AI search SOV emerged as a parallel metric — your percentage of total citations across ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini/Perplexity vs your defined competitor set.

Example

A B2B SaaS brand tracks 50 keywords against 5 competitors. Across all 50 keywords, the brand has 124 ranking positions in the top 20; competitors collectively have 503. SOV = 124 / (124 + 503) = 19.8%. Year-over-year, this metric tells leadership whether SEO investment is gaining vs the competitive set. The same brand also runs 40 category-relevant prompts against all 8 AI engines: it's cited in 31 of the 200 total citations across its 5-competitor set, an AI SOV of 15.5% — slightly behind its organic 19.8%, flagging that competitors are winning AI citations faster than organic rankings, a gap the organic number alone would have hidden. Pair both metrics for full coverage.

Why it matters in 2026

Ranking tells you where you stand; share of voice tells you whether you’re winning or losing relative to the market — the framing a board actually understands. In 2026 that picture is incomplete without its AI-search twin: your share of citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Overviews versus the same competitor set. A flat organic SOV can hide a collapsing AI SOV, or a challenger brand quietly out-citing you in assistants. SearchChamp measures AI share of voice against up to 20 competitors across all 8 engines, so you can report both halves of the story.

Common questions about Share of Voice (Search).

Ranking tells you where you are; SOV tells you whether you’re gaining or losing relative to the market. A flat ranking with falling SOV means competitors are improving faster than you.
Highly category-dependent. In a 5-competitor set, 20% is “fair share”; 30%+ is leadership; 10% is challenger-mode. Track quarter-over-quarter delta — direction matters more than absolute number.
Only partially — they move together but diverge often enough that tracking just one misleads you. The biggest gaps tend to be emerging brands that have invested in llms.txt and FAQPage schema; they frequently punch above their organic weight in AI citations. Track both so a strong organic position doesn’t mask a weak AI one.
Yes, and it happens more often than you'd expect. AI assistants weight content structure and authoritative citation heavily, so a smaller brand with clean FAQPage schema, llms.txt, and well-sourced content can out-cite a larger competitor in AI answers even while trailing badly in organic rankings, which typically reward accumulated backlink authority more than content structure alone.
