What is Featured Snippet?

By SearchChamp teamUpdated

A featured snippet is a selected search result that Google displays above the standard organic listings — often called "position 0" — in a formatted box that directly answers the user's query. Google extracts the snippet from a web page's content and displays it with the page title and URL. Featured snippets come in four primary formats: paragraph snippets (a 40-60 word text extract), list snippets (bulleted or numbered steps), table snippets (tabular data extracted from a page), and video snippets (a timestamp-linked YouTube clip). Google selects snippets algorithmically based on how cleanly a page's content answers the query — not strictly by organic rank, so a page at position 3-5 can win the snippet over the #1 result if its content is more concise and direct.

Featured Snippet in context

Featured snippets launched broadly in 2014 and quickly became one of the most contested real-estate pieces in SEO. Winning a featured snippet historically meant gaining significant click-through rate, as position 0 drew up to 35% of clicks on some informational queries. That calculus shifted dramatically in 2023-2026: Google's AI Overviews now occupy the same visual space as featured snippets, and in many cases explicitly replace them for informational queries. By mid-2025, AI Overviews had displaced featured snippets on approximately 25-35% of queries they previously covered. Zero-click search — where the user reads the SERP answer without clicking — is a direct side effect: studies from 2024 suggest that pages earning featured snippets see organic click rates of 5-10% on some queries, while losing clicks to users who read the answer in the box. The discipline of "optimizing for featured snippets" has evolved into optimizing for both the featured snippet and AI Overview citation simultaneously, since the structural signals that win both are nearly identical.

Example

A user searches "what is a canonical URL". Google displays a featured snippet with a 55-word paragraph extracted verbatim from the top-ranking page that opens with a clean definitional sentence. The page ranks #3 organically but wins position 0 because its first paragraph is the most direct, concise answer. Below the snippet: People Also Ask, then organic results starting at #1. Net click distribution: ~8% of total query volume clicks the snippet source, ~5% goes to PAA expansions, ~30% goes to the top organic results that follow. Pages without a direct-answer first paragraph rarely win snippets — even at #1.

Common questions about Featured Snippet.

A selected search result Google displays above the standard organic listings — often called "position 0" — in a formatted box that directly answers the user's query, extracted from a page's content and shown with its title and URL. Snippets come in four primary formats: paragraph (a 40-60 word extract), list, table, and video. Google selects them algorithmically based on how cleanly a page answers the query, not strictly by organic rank.
Google's algorithm looks for pages that answer the query concisely and directly in their content. Key signals: a direct-answer sentence in the first paragraph (60 words or fewer), structured lists or tables where applicable, FAQPage schema, and a URL already ranking in the top 10. You cannot manually request a featured snippet — the algorithm selects it dynamically based on query context and content quality.
Yes. Google selects featured snippets from the top-10 organic results, not exclusively from #1. A page at positions 3-8 can win position 0 if its content structure answers the query more directly than higher-ranked pages. This is why featured-snippet optimization focuses on content format — lead with the answer, then elaborate — not just ranking.
A featured snippet is a verbatim or lightly edited extract from a single page. An AI Overview is a synthesized answer generated by Google's LLM that may draw from multiple pages and paraphrase, rather than quote. AI Overviews have been replacing featured snippets on many informational queries since 2024. Structurally, both are won through the same content signals: direct-answer leads, FAQPage schema, and authoritative content.
